Providing A Natural and Healthy Diet
In the wild, tortoises would roam around coming across all sorts of food they would find tasty. The plants would be varied, providing a balanced nutritional diet for them. New research by Andy Highfield suggests that in dry seasons tortoises will also eat some dried plants and seeds.
Tortoise food for captive tortoises is generally much more limited, sometimes they only have access to the odd bit of limp lettuce, pellets or cucumber, none of which is nutritional tortoise food.
Picking a range of plants and weeds for tortoises is easy and free! A good website to help you know what to feed is the Tortoise Table.
You can also grow your own weeds and wild flowers from seed!! The munchability is just too much to resist. Providing souces of Calicum is also very imprortant, I use Limestone flour and Cuttle fish and I also add the vitamin powder, Nutrobal.
All tortoises need water! It is vital to their health. A dish such as a plant pot tray is ideal as they do like to sit in shallow water. It needs changing every day though. I also bath my tortoises in warm water weekly or daily for the little ones.
