The Opuntia Cactus Nursery
Opuntia Cactus and Succulents are a great form of calcuim and fibre for a tortoise. There are many different species of Opuntia and in my little nursery I have gathered just a few. Although Opuntia is great for tortoises you don't really want to give them too much as it can cause loose poos! Occassionally I have some Opuntias and Succulents for sale, bot mostly they are eaten by the Urban Tortoises!
The pads that I do sell are usually unrooted. Rooting is easy, place in a sand soil mix and do not water for two weeks, the roots will then take. In the summer I water my Opuntias regularly, keeping the soil moist. In the winter I water once a week. When feeding Opuntia to my tortoises, I like to burn to spines away with a naked flame and then scrape them with a knife. A top tip for geting spines out of your fingers is using sello tape!
